The Snohomish County Vikings may have played their best game of the season last weekend against the King County Jaguars.
But playoff-bound King County was too much for Snohomish County and rolled to a 37-7 victory in both teams’ Northwest Football League regular season finale Aug. 28 at French Field in Kent.
The Vikings (1-9 in the league, 2-10 overall) averted a shutout with a 60-yard touchdown pass from quarterback John McCourt to wide receiver Drew Jenkins with 11 seconds left in the game.
“The guys played a heck of a ball game,” said Snohomish County coach Wes Fischer, who noted the Vikings had one touchdown called back in the first half and also missed a field goal. “That was so frustrating. The guys were playing well enough to be in that ball game.
“They just played their hearts out. I was really proud.”
The Snohomish County defense had a productive outing with five takeaways from the King County offense.
“The defense just played their tails off,” Fischer said. “We just played so hard that it created a problem for them.”
King County (8-2, 8-2) finished third in the league and faces the West Sound Saints in a first-round playoff game Sept. 11 at Silverdale Stadium.
Fischer already is looking ahead to next year and likes what he’s hearing from his players.
“The core group of players are all talking about being back next year,” he said. “They’re planning to be working out together. I think our strengths are getting stronger.”
Snohomish County still has one more non-league game this year. The Vikings host the Washington Cavaliers in the annual Harvest Bowl at 1 p.m. Oct. 2 at Edmonds Stadium.
In the first meeting between the teams, Snohomish County won 20-18 on a last second touchdown.
“They were eager to get another shot at us,” Fischer said.
Proceeds from the game will support area food banks through the Volunteers of America.
