Winless in 22 previous trips to the eastern foothills of the Cascades, the King’s boys track team finally found the right combination at the Cashmere Invitational last weekend.
Senior Charlie Waldburger placed first in triple jump with a personal-record leap of 41 feet, 101/2 inches and won the long jump with a mark of 20 feet, 1/2 inch.
Brandon Thompson was King’s other individual champion, taking the 1,500-meter run in 4:18.10. The senior standout finished second in the 800 in a career-best time of 2:05.84.
Freshman Michael Davis placed second in the javelin and sophomore Calvin Fugii took third in the shot put. Hadley Ma finished fourth in the 400, Greg Flowers took fourth in the 200 and the King’s 400 relay team placed second.
“We got big performances from a lot of different people,” King’s coach Daunte Gouge said. “Everybody scored points.”
The Knights secured the team title with 83 points, followed by Cashmere (70), Ephrata (60), Toppenish (57), and Naches (49).
On the girls side, King’s finished third overall with 82 points, behind Cascade of Leavenworth (113) and Ephrata (88).
Junior Breyanne Nordtvedt won the triple jump with a mark of 34 feet, 2 inches and finished third in both hurdles races. Senior Rachel Strand claimed the 800 in 2:30.20.
Alex Keeney took second to Nordtvedt in the triple jump, Heidi Kieling placed third in the 3,000 and the King’s 400 and 1,600 relay teams both finished fourth.
“We took a smaller group over there and did real well,” Gouge said.
