Knights hoop it up at Surf ‘N Slam

The King’s boys basketball team bounced back from a one-point loss in the semifinals to take third place in the Slam Division of the Surf ‘N Slam Tournament, defeating John Paul II (Plano, Texas) 58-42 in San Diego, Dec. 30.
“We were down by one at halftime and did a nice job of taking control in the second half,” King’s coach Bill Liley said. Ryan Hoff was 3-for-5 from 3-point range and scored a game-high 20 points for the Knights. Teammate Alex Mar had eight points and six assists.
King’s improved to 5-2 overall.
The Knights beat West Allis Central of Wisconsin in the first round on Dec. 28, 49-40 behind 12 points by Karl Clocksin before losing 58-57 to Granite Bay of California, Dec. 29.
Meanwhile, the King’s girls used an 11-2 run to start the fourth quarter and beat Ironwood of Tucson, Arizona 43-35 to earn a third-place finish in the San Diego Surf ‘N Slam Tournament, Dec. 30. Ali McConnaughey and Makenzie Taylor each scored nine points to lead the Knights.
King’s beat University (San Francisco) 42-30 on Dec. 29, closing the game on a 12-2 run. Dionna Kirton led King’s with 12 points, eight rebounds, six blocks and three steals.
King’s lost its opener 53-41 to Santa Theresa Dec. 28 despite 13 points by Ali McConnaughey.
