It’s just about playoff time again, so that must mean the wins are piling up for the King’s girls basketball team.

The Knights (9-0 league, 14-2 overall) appear headed for a third straight undefeated Chinook League campaign and remain a solid No. 2 behind Brewster in the Associated Press Class A state poll.

King’s is riding a 10-game win streak that could climb to 14 in a row before the Tri-district tournament begins Feb. 19.

“You want to keep this roll going,” King’s coach Eric Rasmussen said.

In addition to victories over two 3A foes and a pair of 2A schools, the Knights have smothered their Chinook League opposition by an average margin of 37.4 points per game.

That high standard is partly why their 49-36 win over Seattle Christian Jan. 14 was somewhat troubling for the Knights. It was their closest league game in more than two seasons.

“Since then, we’ve made good progress each game,” Rasmussen said. “We’re going in the right direction at the right time.”

After its encounter with second-place Seattle Christian, King’s blasted its next three league opponents by 38, 47 and 43 points.

“It’s a combination of our three seniors playing really well and our younger kids watching that and picking up on it,” Rasmussen said.

Seniors Rachel Strand (18.1 points per game), Christina Wikstrom (13.4) and Jen Galliher (5.9) are combining for 63 percent of the team’s offensive output.

Sophomore forward Hayley Zevenbergen has reached double figures the past three games.

“Offensively, she’s given us a shot in the arm,” Rasmussen said. “More important, she’s become our best defender. We’ve seen a lot of improvement from her.”

King’s travels to Tacoma Baptist (Jan. 31) and Auburn Adventist (Feb. 4) before closing out the regular season by hosting Canadian powerhouse Heritage Park (Feb. 6) and Seattle Christian (Feb. 7).

“That’s a good finish for us,” Rasmussen said.
