The King’s girls basketball team showed they are ready for the state tournament by soundly beating Vashon Island 62-42 in the 1A bi-district tournament Feb. 23.

The win earned King’s its 15th consecutive trip to state.

Vashon never got the stops necessary to put a solid run together. King’s junior guard Lauren Thompson scored four straight points in the early part of the first quarter to put the Knights ahead 6-2 and they never looked back.

Junior Bianca Rowland followed with seven straight points to give King’s a 13-3 lead.

King’s held an advantage of 55-29 on the boards.

“They didn’t have a large front line and we were able to take advantage of that,” said Rowland.

Rowland led all scorers with 24 points and 11 rebounds. She also said she was excited to go to her first state tournament.

“Rowland is a very good athlete who is able to take over a game,” said head coach Eric Rasmussen.

Senior forward Danielle Clauson, who had 13 points and 10 rebounds, hit her second 3-point shot at the 4:35 mark of the second quarter to boost her team to a 23-9 lead.

King’s largest lead was 54-29, at the 4:30 point of the fourth quarter. King’s also contained Vashon’s second leading scorer, sophomore guard Zelda Porter, to one point.

“Defensively we contained their guards and offensively we got into a good rhythm and got some good shots,” said Rasmussen.

King’s leading scorer, senior forward Sarah Strand, did not play because of the flu.

Freshman forward Kelly Costello was the only offensive highlight for Vashon. She put together a 14-point outing, seven more than any other teammate. At halftime Costello had 10 of Vashon’s 15 points.

Vashon was eliminated by ninth-ranked Seattle Christian Feb. 24.
