Shorecrest’s Kevin Ramos won the 100 and 200 meters and anchored the Scots’ winning 400 meter relay team but it was King’s day to shine at the Shoreline City Championships May 4.

The King’s boys and girls track and field teams swept the annual track meet at Shoreline Stadium, with the girls team scoring 98 points and the boys team scoring 95 points to win.

Shorecrest finished second in the girls competition with 82 points, followed by Shorewood (80 points) and Shoreline Christian (14 points). Shorewood and Shorecrest tied for second on the boys side with 77 points while Shoreline Christian was fourth with 15 points.

King’s Danielle Clauson set three personal records and won the discus and javelin easily. Clauson threw 121 feet, 8 inches in the discus, 133-2 in the javelin, and was second in the shot put with a heave of 36-9.

Janae Christiansen of Shorewood won the shot put with a personal best throw of 37-8.5, which puts her fourth in the state in 4A right now.

King’s 800 relay of Erin Bremond, Megan Northey, Olivia Thomas and Kim Mayhle won in a season-best time of 1:47.91.

“Our splits were amazing,” Mayhle said. “We ran the best we’ve run.”

Thomas may be a permanent part of the 800 relay, adding it to her usual staples of the 800, 1,600 and 1,600 relay. Thomas sat out the 800 and 1,600 during the meet to try out the 100 and 400. She won the 400 in a time of 1 minute.

Shorewood’s Sara Levy won the 800 (2:27) and 1,600 (5:21).

Other girls highlights included Shorecrest senior Cora Speidel’s victories in the triple jump (35-9) and long jump (17-2.5). Sarah Daigneault of Shoreline Christian won the 100 hurdles in 16.69 and Mariah Louie of King’s won the 300 hurdles in 50.73. Mayhle won the 100 in 13 seconds and Bremond won the 200 in 27.24.

Erica Jensen of Shorewood won the 3,200 in 12:16, while teammate Caroline Soules won the high jump, clearing 4-10. King’s Megan Crosby won the pole vault, clearing 8-6.

Shorecrest won the 400 relay (51.19) and 1,600 relay (4:19).

On the boys side, King’s 1,600 relay of Bryan Ayers, Austin Dean, Tony Yakovich and Josh Fuller won in a time of 3:30.6, the best time in Class 1A this year.

Shorecrest’s Ramos won the 100 in 11.08 and 200 in 22.45. The 400 relay for Shorecrest won in 44.91, a season-best time.

King’s Raymond Zhang won the 110 hurdles in 16.91 and Shorewood’s Taylor Hartman won the 300 hurdles in 44.0.

Shorewood’s Kane Thomas won the 400 in 53.84. Shorecrest’s Hans Anderson won the 800 in 2:07 and teammate Kevin Ruhlman won the 1,600 in 4:44. King’s Evan Dull won the 3,200 in 10:07 beating out Shoreline Christian’s Jeremy Rasor (10:09).

In the field events, Shorewood’s Kelley Neubauer won the discus (148-8) and King’s Alex Lehman won the javelin (148-8). King’s Victor Swanson took first in the shot put (47-0) while teammate Tony Yakovich won the triple jump (42-4). Shorewood’s Shane Gruger won the long jump (21-1) while teammate Justyn Cox won the pole vault (11-1). King’s Kyle Talbot took first in the high jump, clearing 6-0.

Shorecrest junior pole vaulter Roy McElmurry, who had a good chance of qualifying for state this year, found out he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last week and is done for the season.

“It was too bad,” Shorecrest coach Brandon Christensen said. “Kind of the heartbreaker of the season at this point.”
