King’s capped its inaugural Cascade Conference football season the same way it started — with a victory.
Quarterback Greg Uhrich passed for a pair of second-half touchdowns and the defense didn’t budge in a 17-0 shutout of Cedarcrest Oct. 30 at Woolsey Stadium.
“Our defense has played well all season,” King’s coach Jim Shapiro said. “It’s been a staple for us this year.”
The win snapped a three-game slide for the Knights, who will next face the Whatcom County league champion in a winner-to-state district playoff game Nov. 9.
Slowed by two fumbles and two interceptions in the first half, King’s (3-3 league, 4-4 overall) didn’t score until two minutes into the third quarter.
On the third play of the second half, Devon Bryant picked off Red Wolves quarterback Jeff Eldred at the Cedarcrest 35-yard line. The interception set up Uhrich’s 13-yard TD pass to sophomore tailback Spencer Clark.
King’s then stopped the Red Wolves on fourth down near midfield and extended its edge to 10-0 on Andrew Lutton’s 20-yard field goal at the 5:43 mark of the third quarter.
Clark’s second fumble recovery of the night led to Uhrich’s 4-yard play-action TD pass to tight end Ryan Dundas with 6:22 remaining in the contest.
The Knights outgained Cedarcrest 312 yards to 191 and held the Red Wolves to just 32 rushing yards in the second half.
“We made them throw and we covered the pass real well,” Shapiro said.
Bryant led all rushers with 151 yards on 29 carries and Clark ran for 54 yards on three tries and had five receptions for 42 yards. Uhrich completed nine of his 13 passes for 76 yards.
“We’ve opened up the passing game and now we’re a more balanced team,” Shapiro said. “The first part of the season we were more run-heavy and then we went to the pass. Now we’re able to mix it up.”
