LYNNWOOD — Grand Cinema Alderwood is being demolished to make way for a new Kohl’s department store. The Lynnwood store is one of many that Kohl’s will open for the first time in Washington state later this year.

Kohl’s has not announced their intention to open the Lynnwood store, but city records and the property owner confirmed the news.

Construction of the 98,487-square-foot, two-story Kohl’s department store will begin as soon as the 9.5-acre site is cleared, according to city records. The store is located at Alderwood Mall Boulevard and 184th Street.

The store could be open as early as November for the holiday season, according to Sterling Realty Organization, which owns the property.

“It is a great thing and we welcome Kohl’s to Lynnwood,” said David Kleitsch, the city’s economic development director. “One of our economic development objectives is to maintain our retail prominence. So the more we can bring these businesses into our community, the better off we will be.”

Sterling Realty confirmed that Kohl’s signed a 20-year lease for the site. Landscaping, 493 parking spaces and walkways will be added to the site.

A Kohl’s spokeswoman said the company has not announced plans to build a store in Lynnwood and is unable to comment at this time.

A spokeswoman for Loews Cineplex Entertainment, which operated the Grand Cinema Alderwood, declined to comment.

Based in Menomonee Falls, Wis., Kohl’s is a specialty department store that offers moderately priced, exclusive and national brand apparel, shoes, accessories, beauty and home products.

In 1962, the Kohl family opened the first Kohl’s store in Brookfield, Wis. There are 741 Kohl’s department stores in 41 states, according to the Kohl’s Web site.
