It’s known as a beauty contest, but the results aren’t too pretty for incumbent prosecuting attorney James Krider.
Krider trailed challenger Janice Ellis badly in early returns in the Snohomish County primary election Tuesday night, Sept. 17.
Krider is a Republican and Ellis is a Democrat, so both will advance to the general election Nov. 5. Yet, the primary is a good indicator that Krider has a lot of catching up to do and the campaign undoubtedly will heat up during the next six weeks.
Hurting Krider was the fact that most law enforcement officials, including his own employees, endorsed Ellis.
In races that will be decided once all the primary votes are tallied, county voters were narrowly defeating a measure that would increase the sales tax to run the new county jail.
Emergency Medical Services levies in Mountlake Terrace, Edmonds and Brier appeared to be passing. Edmonds won, but the other two still needed more votes to be validated.
Fire District 1 in south Snohomish County was just barely passing its bonds and tax levies in early tallies. Fire District 15’s tax levy on the Tulalip Reservation was winning handily — if it gets enough votes to validate the election.
