The infamous injury bug just won’t leave the Shorecrest girls basketball team alone.
Sophomore Banimi Lawson became the latest casualty, going down with a fractured right radius in Shorecrest’s 44-42 loss to Mountlake Terrace Jan. 31.
The 5-foot-11 power forward landed on her shooting hand when she was fouled on a layup attempt at the beginning of the third quarter.
Scots coach Don Dalziel said Lawson will miss the rest of the season, leaving a sizable hole in Shorecrest’s frontcourt.
Lawson was averaging close to eight points a game since replacing senior forward Jenna DeRosier in the starting lineup Jan. 15. DeRosier has been sidelined with a knee injury for nearly a month.
“That’s two big pieces of our team,” Dalziel said.
The Scots were without starting point guard Whitney Michiels for about a week at the start of the season and backup guard Jenna Walsh sat out all of December with a fractured left wrist.
“It’s difficult to deal with the loss of a starter at any point of the season,” Dalziel said. “But with five games to go and you’re gearing up for the playoffs, that doubles the impact.”
With their loss to Mountlake Terrace, the Scots dipped from third to fourth in the Western Conference 4A South Division standings.
It was Shorecrest’s second two-point defeat in three games and Terrace’s fourth win in six games.
“Terrace played with a lot of heart, hustle and determination,” Dalziel said. “They played with more intensity than us. Coach (Nick) Greenwell has done a great job with his kids.”
Shorecrest senior Haley Martin scored a game-high 18 points — just shy of her conference-leading 20.8 average.
