Summer Meltdown set for Darrington
The 8th Annual Flowmotion “Summer Meltdown” music extravaganza is set for Darrington Aug. 8-10, it’s third year at the Whitehorse Mountain Amphitheater, an eclectic gathering of musical performances.
This year the lineup closes cultural gaps with 10 national touring acts, including Buckethead, Tea Leaf Green, That 1 Guy, Steve Kimock &The Everyone Orchestra and more than 20 regional performers representing elements of rock, jazz, roots, funk, bluegrass, hip-hop, country, soul, vaudeville, ska, drum ‘n bass, folk, steel drums and even some glam.
Summer Meltdown is becoming known as one of the Pacific Northwest’s most popular and entertaining music festivals, with attendance expected to climb to over 4,000 this year.
In addition to the impressive band line-up, there will be fine food offerings and a wide range of environmental and social outreach organizations in the growing “Eco” Village.
Festival co-producer Terra Roots, a non-profit advocating sustainable living, responsible action and community building through grants to local musicians, artists and community organizations, will be making donations to benefit the Darrington Community Services and Food Bank, and the Darrington Family Support and Resource Center.
The festival also encourages families to join in the fun with a dedicated family campground, a kid’s play and activity area, the annual Meltdown Kid’s parade, a special show by Recess Monkey, and the Little Seahorse Showcase (featuring young people performing live on the Main Stage.)
The spacious campsites stay cool beneath tall firs and cedars, kids can splash in the stream on the grounds, and everyone looks up to the glacier-capped Whitehorse Mountain, looming over all.
Traditionally, this event has been a celebration of art, life and community. Flowmotion’s Josh Clauson says “Meltdown is based on coming together, renewing the sense of community – the idea of ‘all one people’ becomes reality for a weekend.
Tickets are now $110 for all three days and nights of camping. Limited tickets are still available at walk up locations for $90 until supplies last. Visit our list of ticket outlets to find out where to get them. Prices rise to $130 on the day of the event. For more information, visit www.summermeltdown.com
Evergreen State Fair set for Aug. 21-Sept. 1 in Monroe
The Evergreen State Fair, celebrating 100 years in Snohomish County, is offering new and exciting events this year.
The Sand Sculpture Company will shape 50 tons of sand into a collection of our favorite Fair animals. The shaping and building begins Aug. 21 and continues for eight days. Estimated to be completed Aug. 28, the sand sculpture will remain on display throughout the rest of the fair.
Visitors wil be able to travel thousands of miles with a fun cast of characters in a program called the “Australian Out Back Experience.” Through video, song, displays and performance, people will get a feel for what it’s like to live and play “down under.”
Visitors to the exhibit can watch special programming about this continental country or attend a show featuring a cast of Aussie characters who will sing “bush” songs from the Out Back, show off reptiles and keep the audience laughing with a different brand of comedy.
Although unofficially opened last year, the Western Heritage Museum will debut new displays during the Fair. Free to all guests, the museum will be open during fair hours, offering an excellent collection of Snohomish County History covering logging, mining, construction, transportation and agriculture.
To recognize the past 100 years, every barn at the fairgrounds has been selected to commemorate a particular decade or two.
For example, the Display Hall will feature the historic time frame of 1908- 1919 while the Swine Barn will relive the 1960s (Peace, Love and Livestock). This will be a fun and educational stroll down memory lane for the whole family!
“Annual festivals, loyally supported, weave elements that bind and build community and Flowmotion’s annual homegrown and hand-built festival is one example that surpasses expectations.” – RELIX MAGAZINE
