I have owned my home in Shoreline for 46 years and raised four daughters in the Shoreline School System. The education that is offered students today far excels what we had in the ’60s and ’70s. I have always supported teachers and have many members of my family in this capacity; having said that, the teachers are asking too much.
When this school board took over, they inherited a can of worms unknown until they started looking at the district’s finances and past history of expenditures. We, as homeowners, have to be fiscally responsible; this had not been the case for many years, as the previous school board continued to win popular approval by spending.
Now the board had to make tough decisions in order to get financially responsible paying for basics. These members are paid nothing for their time. It’s easy to criticize when you are not making unpopular decisions. My daughters walked to junior high and high school, it didn’t hurt them one bit. Two daughters were in split classes and felt challenged to do better.
I don’t have the answer; however, we are living in a generation of me, me and me. Parents want it all; hearing them speak negatively about the school district, the children with no knowledge of the situation become disenchanted. In other words, we are a bunch of whiners.
Throwing out the incumbents in the November election will create a bigger problem. Let’s live with the board’s decision to bring us back to fiscal responsibility. If we don’t see improvements in the next term, then make a decision.
