Letter carriers delivering mail tomorrow, Saturday, May 8, will also pick up bags of nonperishable food donations that will help feed hungry people in the local community.

The annual event, sponsored by the National Association of Letter Carriers is the nation’s largest one-day food drive.

The food donations are especially welcomed in Washington state, which has the fifth highest hunger rate in the U.S. Western Washington has almost 600,000 hungry people, and of those, 40 percent are children, according to a press release.

“This time of year is critical for many food banks, since their stock of holiday donations runs low just as school breakfast and lunch programs close for the summer,” said Linda Nageotte, Food Lifeline president and CEO. “Children in particular benefit from the food provided by the NALC Food Drive.”

All the food stays in the community where it is collected.

Among the items most needed are high-protein items such as canned meats, tuna, peanut butter and stew, as well as canned fruits and vegetables.
