The Edmonds Arts Commission presents an exhibit at the Edmonds Library of work by digital artists Henk Dawson, Susie Howell and Tonnie Wolfe. The exhibit may be viewed until Nov. 29.
Henk Dawson, Susie Howell and Tonnie Wolfe share a passion for the digital medium, using original photographs in some form to create art on the computer. They view the camera and computer as tools that liberate them to explore their personal vision. These artists are not tied to a single medium and experiment with a variety of approaches and techniques. From straight photography with a twist, to mixed media combined with digital painting, they present the possibilities available to those who have mastered the digital paintbrush. In addition to the artwork is information about the artist’s creative process and how they combine the mediums.
Dawson, who has a background in traditional painting and fine art photography, has dedicated himself to becoming a skilled digital painter. Using original photography as source material, he creates pieces that emanate color, tone and texture. Completed images from the computer are printed on canvas or fine art paper with pigment ink, then enhanced with acrylic paints — combining the unique features of each medium to create his evocative artwork.
Howell explores and captures the tranquility of nature throughout the seasons. Her images, whether black and white infrared or subtly colored digital, reflect an ability to capture each scene with an artist’s eye. Printing on unusual handmade papers further enhances her unique and painterly images. With the addition of digital painting she can more clearly express her personal and distinctive perspective of the natural world.
From childhood, Wolfe has experienced pleasure, awe, joy and healing in moments spent examining nature. Her love of nature is reflected in her artwork, the creation of which is not a choice, but a necessity. Her images reflect the energy and peace she finds in the details, colors and textures of the world around her. Wolfe’s digital paintings are printed on varied surfaces and sometimes embellished with fiber and acrylic paints.
