The foundation for a bright future is being laid in the North Sound Christian School volleyball program.
With nary a senior on the roster and one lone junior, the Lions will be relying on their eight sophomores and freshman.
“We have a great foundation for the future,” said third-year Lions coach Stacie Mahler. “These girls are just working hard. We have great team chemistry.”
Leadership will be provided by junior setter Elyse Bunger, a three-year varsity starter, and sophomore middle blocker Kaylene Chung, who started last year.
Despite the lack of upperclassmen North Sound Christian School actually has some experience.
Sophomore outside hitters Marissa Orton and Victoria Patterson both saw action as freshmen and will be relied on for offense.
Newcomers who have stood out include freshman outside hitter Tori Speck and freshman middle blocker Chantelle Marks.
“The offense is pretty good,” Mahler said. “It’s developing. For a young team, they’re right on target.”
The emphasis in practice is on developing a strong defense, Mahler added.
The Lions finished 7-5 last season in Northwest B League play. The goal this year to win the league title.
“We’ve definitely improved,” Mahler said. “The players have a desire to excel.
“Our goal this year is to be league champs and to be academically excellent. We have some very ambitious young ladies. They are very hard working. We have great leadership qualities that are really pulling this together. We’re looking forward to an exciting season.”
