In a battle of perfect conference records, somebody had to lose.

North Sound Christian remained perfect in league play, defeating Lopez Island 25-20, 25-11, 25-15 on Oct. 16 to improve to 8-0 in the Northwest 1B conference and clinch a berth in the 1B Tri-district tournament.

“They came out ready to play,” North Sound head coach Marla Tappero said of her team. “I am very confident in my girls’ abilities.”

The Lions (9-2 overall) were led by Chantelle Meeks with 13 kills and five digs, Tori Speck had 11 kills and six aces, Maylisa Chung had 26 assists and seven digs and Elisabeth Tissell added 11 aces and eight digs for North Sound.

“They just play with their hearts and their heads,” Tappero said. “There was a lot of energy and excitement going into the game.”

Lopez Island (6-3) is still in the running to clinch a place in the postseason tournament as well. The top four teams in the standings go to the playoffs, with the fifth place team playing a play-in match for the final spot.

Tappero knows her team has the confidence and desire to go deep into the postseason.

“Their goal is to go undefeated in league this year,” Tappero said. “I believe in my girls. I am continually amazed at the level of play that they bring to the table. They step up to the plate. They are fired up and ready to go.

“We’re a small team. We only have seven girls on the team, but they have more heart than a lot of the schools that have more girls. They play like a team. They play together. They feed off of each others’ energy, and play very well together.”
