MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — A local artist is honored his work will be promoted at an exhibit opening later this summer.

Mountlake Terrace native Andrew Morrison, 32, is the featured artist during the exhibit on display at Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center.

The exhibit opening is from 6-8 p.m. July 12 at the cultural center, located at 5011 Whitebear Way, Seattle.

Morrison is premiering between 20 and 25 new pieces that he began working on earlier this year along with older pieces of art his following has collected.

He will feature acrylic paintings and charcoal prints.

“I’m working on them as we speak,” he said. “I’m inundating myself in the creative process.”

Morrison says he wants people to feel the energy emanate off his innovative artwork.

“My work will be right off the press,” he said.

The cultural center held a contest earlier this year for artists to submit work with the winners’ artwork promoted during the event. Morrison submitted three pieces that won over the selection committee.

“I was deeply honored to showcase my work,” he said. “It’s a real blessing to have the forces working in your favor.”

After moving to Nevada last summer, Morrison has since moved back to the Seattle area to tend to family matters.

Morrison moved to Nevada to pursue graduate school and continue his art studies, adding to his degree from the School of the Museum of the Fine Arts in Boston. Morrison still aspires to attend graduate school to pursue his studies in art and is applying to various programs.

“I’m keeping my eyes on the right prize,” he said.
