Children’s book author Helen Furbush and illustrator Christine McCroskey have collaborated to create the new children’s book “Lying Awake,” a lyrical, read-aloud picture book that features not only a story, but includes activities and educational facts for all ages. Edmonds Bookshop hosts the author and illustrator for a book signing 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14.

In “Lying Awake,” a young girl named Lanie lies awake aboard her grandfather’s boat, thinking about the birthday wish that has come true: having her grandfather all to herself on his boat in the waters of Puget Sound. Interwoven in the story is educational information about the animals they encounter at the marina and on the beach, and various aspects of life on a boat. Readers can decode maritime signal flag messages, try a recipe and learn to play Grandfather’s favorite card game. The book is recommended for ages 6 through adult.

McCroskey, an Edmonds resident who taught in Edmonds elementary schools for more than 20 years, teamed up with author Helen Furbush, hailing from Mamaroneck, N.Y., after the author’s mother, Joanne Holcomb of Edmonds, invited McCroskey on an excursion to Vashon Island. As the two walked and talked, it became apparent that her daughter was searching for a suitable Northwest watercolor artist. Helen’s nautical story and Chris’ passion for family, boating and watercolor art could not have been a better fit.

The book signing takes place at The Edmonds Bookshop, located at 111 Fifth Ave. S. in Edmonds. Molasses crinkle cookies, a recipe included in the book, will be served. For more information call 425-775-2789.
