Choir of the Sound and the Sno-King Community Chorale conclude its seasons over the next two weekends with an emphasis on Broadway standards and renditions of modern American musical fare.
The Choir of the Sound’s 27th annual Spring Pops Concert is set for four performances at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, June 5 and Sunday, June 6. Directed by Judy Filibeck, the program features songs from the choir’s favorite Broadway musicals, including “H.M.S. Pinafore,” “Guys and Dolls,” “The Music Man,” “My Fair Lady,” and “0 Brother, Where Art Thou.” This celebration of American musical entertainment will also feature choreography, colorful costumes, and professional sets and lighting.
Affiliated with Shoreline Community College, Choir of the Sound is a non-profit, all volunteer organization that was founded in 1977 and has since grown to more than 100 active members. The choir offers three concerts annually, including pops selections, a classical concert, and the winter holiday concert.
The shows will take place at the Shorecrest High School Performing Arts Center, located at 15343 25th Ave. NE in Shoreline. Tickets are $18 for adults and $16 for children and seniors. Season tickets are available by calling 206-528-9990.
In its third and final performance of the season June 12, the Sno-King Community Chorale will present a variety of music from Broadway show tunes to toe-tapping gospel. “Hello, Dolly,” a “Music Man” medley, a new arrangement of “This Little Light of Mine,” and the comic “Neighbors’ Chorus” by Offenbach are among the program’s selections, along with a piece written especially for the Chorale by composer/arranger Ken Kraintz.
Special guest artists will be the Seattle Jazz Singers, who are enjoying a growing popularity on the club scene. Both groups are led by long-time music educator and director Frank DeMiero, whose experience and expertise range from classical to jazz.
The 65-member chorale is already looking forward to its holiday concert next fall, which will be one of the last performances on the site of the old Edmonds High School and Puget Sound Christian College before the building closes for its major transformation into the new Edmonds Center for the Arts. Always eager to add more singers to the Chorale, DeMiero extends an open invitation to drop in and observe rehearsals, which are held every Tuesday, 7:05-9:15 p.m. at Mill Creek Hall on Edmonds Community College campus.
The performance takes place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, June 12 at Edmonds Center for the Arts, located at 4th and Daley in Edmonds. Tickets for the Pops concert are $10, with students, elementary through college-age, admitted free.
