Kirby Wilbur of KVI-AM and staff from the Northwest Division of The Salvation Army came together in the early hours of Thursday, Sept. 22 with the famous red kettles in hand to raise funds for the Army’s relief efforts in the Gulf Coast. With Hurricane Rita pending, the need for monetary donations was especially clear.

“It is only with the community’s continued financial support that we can do what we do,” said Bob Bearchell of The Salvation Army. “And with Rita on the horizon, we need that support more now than ever.”

The fund-raising event took place from 5 to 9 a.m. at Patty’s Eggnest west of Mill Creek, which is where Wilbur broadcast his live radio talk show and asked the community and diners to donate to The Salvation Army. The total amount raised at the event was $666.

“We raised over $600 at one location in a matter of hours,” Bearchell said. “That is a huge success.”

The money will go toward the Salvation Army’s national hurricane relief effort, which has netted $110 million. As of Sept. 10, the Salvation Army had served 2.1 million meals in 15 states, housed 31,000 people in shelters in seven states, dedicated 1,000 officers and employees full-time to Katrina assistance, and helped locate 4,700 survivors.

The Salvation Army is raising funds for Hurricane Katrina response through a national telephone number: 1-800-SALARMY; and online at www.salvationarmyusa.org.

Donations that are designated for Hurricane Katrina relief will be used in their entirety and solely for hurricane response efforts.
