Maria Walters, of Mill Creek, joined the ranks of an elite group of less than 6 percent of Girl Scouts by earning her Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn.

The Gold Award symbolizes outstanding accomplishments in the areas of leadership, community service, career planning and personal development. Drawing upon her own experience and ingenuity, Walters’ project focused on international relations, an issue she personally feels has a big impact on the community today.

Because Walters had such an amazing experience during her twin study-abroad program last year in Germany, the recent graduate of Jackson High School decided to organize a foreign exchange informational night at Jackson High School to increase the awareness of foreign exchange programs, both to students and host families.

Sixteen organizations, as well as several former host parents and current students from a variety of countries, were on hand to answer questions and share their experiences with the program.

Girls who earn the Gold Award are eligible for a variety of scholarships to continue their education at more than 100 colleges and universities.
