Bernard “Bernie” Cerier, 75, of Mill Creek, was presented with the Snohomish County Chapter of the American Red Cross’s prestigious Glassberg Award at the chapter’s annual volunteer recognition dinner June 22. It is the highest award bestowed on a volunteer by the local chapter.

Cerier’s Red Cross accomplishments include serving as Red Cross liaison with the Department of Emergency Management of Snohomish County as well as other help agencies throughout the county, maintaining the chapter’s communication systems, teaching Red Cross classes, developing Red Cross informational programs, public speaking, disaster services support, and coordination of in-kind donations to the chapter.

The 10-year Red Cross volunteer is a past recipient of the American Red Cross regional Pacific Pride Award, and was also recently nominated for the national American Red Cross Cynthia Wedel Award for distinguished service.

Cerier, and his wife, Holly, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary June 20. The couple has lived in Mill Creek since 1994.

Volunteerism has been a part of the Cerier’s marriage. Both were active with the American Cancer Society in the Boston area before coming west. After settling in Mill Creek, Holly Cerier served as a volunteer with the Mill Creek Police Department. She later became editor of the Red Cross Disaster Services newsletter for the Snohomish County Chapter. Both continue to volunteer in numerous activities with their synagogue, Congregation Kol Ami in Woodinville.

According to Bernie Cerier, while volunteerism is an activity high on the couple’s agenda, their most enjoyable time is serving as “mom” and “dad” to Maxie, their dog.
