Local teachers win grants from Audubon

Eight Snohomish County elementary teachers recently received 2008-2009 Classroom Conservation Awards from Pilchuck Audubon Society.

In the Everett School District, Denise Willis and Tanya Geibel, second and third grade teachers at Penny Creek Elementary, will purchase Quantum Leap Frog Science/Conservation books for their students.

Teacher Teresa Townsell will use her award to purchase conservation science books at a second grade reading level for her students at View Ridge Elementary in Everett.

Other winners are Veronica Lynch-Wigre of Cedar Wood Elementary and LaVonne Peterson of Jefferson Elementary.

In an effort to counter the trend of species extinction and perpetuate conservation efforts, three years ago the Pilchuck Audubon Society established the Classroom Conservation Awards Program for elementary school teachers.

The goal of the program is to instill in elementary students a sense of need to conserve and protect natural resources. The awards supplement Snohomish County elementary classroom teachers with needed funds for materials or activities for conservation projects.

As many as ten $250 awards are made annually to Snohomish County public or private school teachers for conservation and science-related learning activities and or materials.
