SHORELINE — Lynnwood’s Vince Kinney would not be denied.
Even though the Royals’ sprint medley relay team was third as he began the 400-meter leg of the race, Kinney gradually made up about 30 meters and then passed O’Dea and Shorecrest in the final 100 meters to lead Lynnwood to victory at the 17th annual Shoreline Invitational May 1 at Shoreline Stadium.
The relay consisted of the 200 (Parys Fox), 100 (Randall Eldridge), 100 (Robert Johnson) and 400 (Kinney). Lynnwood (1:35.77) edged O’Dea (1:36.09) for first, while Shorecrest (1:36.20) placed third.
Kinney also ran a leg in the 1,600 relay, helping the Royals (3:28.84) to a sixth-place finish. The junior standout took sixth in the 300 hurdles (40.32) and eighth in the high jump (6-0).
“I got eighth place surprisingly,” Kinney said. “I was tired from the sprint medley, so I didn’t do as good as I should have.”
Kinney was more pleased with his time in the 300 hurdles, which was a personal best.
“I think I could have done better on my second hurdle because I hurdled with the wrong leg,” Kinney said. “But overall I’m pretty happy with my time.”
Lynnwood coach Duane Lewis had to juggle his relay lineup when senior Chad Smith pulled a hamstring earlier in the week.
“We had to switch both our sprint medley and our mile relay and put new kids in,” Lewis said.
Edmonds-Woodway senior Glenn Gallagher took eighth (51.14) in the 400 and was scheduled to run a leg of the 1,600 relay, but was unable to after suffering a muscle strain.
“It wasn’t my best race,” Gallagher said of the 400. “Normally, I’m supposed to go out hard but … for some reason I didn’t go out as hard like I usually do and it ended up hurting me.
“I can always end up learning from things like this.”
The season was going well for Gallagher, who set a school record in the 200 and finished fifth in the 400 and sixth in the 200 at last month’s Eason Invitational.
Teammate Paul Zavaglia placed eighth (40.40) in the 300 hurdles at the Shoreline Invite and ran a personal-best time. Justin Wolfe finished eighth (4:36.14) in the freshman/sophomore 1,600.
Meadowdale senior Kevin Myhre took seventh (15.20) in the 110 hurdles and ninth (41.03) in the 300 hurdles. Teammate Gabe Hammond was 10th in the shot put and Chris Kratz was 10th (4:39.4) in the freshman/sophomore 1,600.
Lynnwood’s Randall Eldridge was eighth (42-11/4)in the triple jump. The Royals’ 400 relay team finished 10th.
Edmonds-Woodway’s Sean Doyle placed 10th (1:59.89) in the 800. Meadowdale’s Duncan Hendrick was 11th (9:36.73) in the 3,200 but he shattered his personal-best time by about 20 seconds.
O’Dea (57 points) edged Inglemoor (501/4) for first place. Kentridge (48) was third and Ballard (42) was fourth.
Fifty-nine teams and more than 800 athletes participated in what is the largest all-boys invitational in the state.
Up next for the four Edmonds District teams is tonight’s Edmonds District championships, which are scheduled to start at 5 p.m. tonight (Friday, May 7) at Edmonds Stadium.
“It’s a pretty big rivalry,” Gallagher said. “We’re out there to have fun yet try to win.”
One race that should draw some attention is the 300 hurdles, which features Kinney, Myhre and Zavaglia.
“We’re pretty even in the 300,” Kinney said. “It will be a good race.”
The district meet should be a good gauge of how the four teams will fare at next week’s Western Conference 4A South Division meet.
“It’ll probably give us a first significant peek as to where we’re setting up for Wesco South,” Edmonds-Woodway coach Rick Fillman said. “All four schools want to win it. Everybody is going to trot out our best, so that will kind of give us a good idea of where we’re at … I expect the competition to be really good.
NOTE
LAKE WASHINGTON INVITATIONAL: Meadowdale’s Monika Gruszecki finished second in the javelin at the Lake Washington Invitational May 1. Gruszecki’s throw of 130 feet, 8 inches was a personal best and a school record.
The Mavericks’ 800 relay team of Paige Huff, Kenisha Draper, Jessica Duty and Megan Bosaw was fifth.
Edmonds-Woodway’s Amy O’Banion clocked in with a season-best time of 13.28 in the 100-meter dash.
