LYNNWOOD — Lynnwood Police Volunteers received the 2003 Team Award for excellence in public service from the Evergreen Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration.
The award, presented by former State Sen. Phil Talmadge at a special ceremony recently recognized both the Citizens Patrol and VIPS (Volunteers in Public Safety) for their unique contributions to public safety in Lynnwood.
“This group of highly motivated citizen volunteers clearly demonstrates the significant degree to which public spirited and well trained volunteers can extend the effectiveness and capability of a government agency, at little cost to the taxpayer,” said ASPA President, Dave Broom.
The Citizens Patrol consists of 70 men and women who patrol the streets of Lynnwood every evening of the week, acting as extra eyes and ears for patrol officers. They help direct traffic at accident scenes, patrol the shopping areas, bike trails and parks on police bicycles, issue disabled parking infraction notices, transport victims and other citizens at the request of officers, provide emergency response for critical incidents, inspect child car safety seats, assist detectives with surveillance and special evidence searches and more.
The VIPS check homes of residents who are on vacation, conduct fingerprinting of citizens, monitor intersections for red light runners, contact businesses with crime prevention information, and assist at major community events.
