LYNNWOOD — If you live in a single-family residence within the Lynnwood city limits, you can place extra garbage, yard debris, and scrap metal out at your curb to be picked up at no additional charge during the week of April 19–23, on your regular garbage collection day.
Here’s how to make it work:
Your regular garbage collector will pick up extra materials the week of April 19, on your regular garbage day. The normal operation of different private trucks for collecting garbage, yard debris, and now, scrap metal, will be taking place. (City of Lynnwood vehicles will not be used for this event.)
• Separate extra garbage, extra yard debris materials, and scrap metal from each other.
• Anything not meeting the conditions will be left at curb.
• If you are not a garbage customer you may still participate. If you are not a garbage service customer and want to participate, find out your neighborhood’s collection day and place your separated materials out on the curb by 6 a.m. that morning.
• There is no limit to the number of garbage units, yard debris units, or separated scrap metal you can place out, as long as they are prepared properly.
• Consider the re-use and recycling opportunities for your unwanted stuff. Call the Lynnwood Recycling Coordinator at 425-670-8302 for the latest information on local drop-off or pick-up options for several items, including refrigerators/freezers, old tires, and other bulky materials.
• Waste prevention actions such as leaving grass clippings on the lawn and backyard composting, can reduce the need for hauling and disposing of yard debris.
Prepare unwanted materials as follows: Each extra garbage unit or extra yard debris unit placed at the curb must: Weigh less than 50 pounds, be placed in boxes, bags, or cans (standard 32-gallon or less) or bundled (use natural twine or rope to tie), be less than three and a half feet long and be easily picked up by one person.
For yard debris only: Do not use wire to bundle. Do not use plastic bags. (Use cans, kraft paper yard bags, or bundle with twine or rope. Kraft bags are available at nurseries and garden centers).
Yard debris includes many organic materials generated from lawn and garden maintenance such as clippings, prunings, leaves, weeds, or twigs. Branches need to be less than four inches in diameter and less than three and a half feet long. If bundling branches, use natural twine or rope. No dirt, sod, rocks, stumps, fruit, vegetables, pet wastes or pet litter, and barbecue ashes or coals are acceptable.
All scrap metal items put at the curb must be separated from the garbage and yard debris.
Acceptable scrap metal items include: Washers and dryers, bed and furniture frames, barbecue grills (No debris/coals/fuel tanks), water heaters, cast iron bathtubs and sinks, metal swing sets and play equipment, ovens and ranges, animal cages (remove debris), fireplace inserts (free of brick and mortar), aluminum, auto body parts (no engine parts), metal ductwork and pipes (no insulation), bicycles, lawnmowers (drain gas and oil), gutters and downspouts (free of debris), exercise equipment, tire rims (no tires), chain-link fencing/posts (remove concrete), metal shelving, wheelbarrows, window frames (remove glass).
Dismantle items the best you can and place them neatly together in their own pile.
They will not take: Yard debris in plastic bags, air conditioners, paint, chemicals, liquids, heat pumps, oil and oil filters, dehumidifiers, televisions, dirt, sod, rocks, concrete, bricks, computers, monitors, printers, remodeling debris (unless prepared as described above), fluorescent tubes and bulbs, tires and vehicle batteries, barrels, drums, cans or any containers that have/had paint or hazardous material, refrigerators, freezers, anything that needs to be shoveled, scooped, dishwashers, fuel tanks of any kind or any garbage or yard debris pile consisting of several loose items.
Unwanted TVs, computers and monitors can no longer go into the garbage. Call Snohomish County at 425-388-3425 or go to www.co.snohomish.wa.us/takeitback for the latest info on recycling drop-off locations.
The Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Station in Everett accepts free drop-off of all types of household hazardous products from county residences, including fluorescent tubes, compact fluorescent bulbs, and small empty propane tanks. Open every Wednesday through Saturday from 7:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., located at 3434 McDougall Ave. (one block east of Broadway and 35th Street). The phone number is 425-388-6050.
