The American people have suffered through hard times in the past year, and the residents of our little corner of Western Washington are no exception.
Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke recently stated that the economic recession that has plagued the nation is “likely over.”
But in our front page story today, some local business owners predict that, while the economy may have bottomed out, there are still two more years of high unemployment and penny pinching ahead.
So what can you do about this?
Last week, we urged you to stay local when shopping to keep your money in your community.
This week we encourage you to remember your less fortunate neighbors and help them when you can.
Give what food items you can spare to your local food bank. Donate those clothes you don’t wear anymore — especially your old winter wardrobe — to a charitable organization. And, of course, you can always donate your time and volunteer to help at a shelter or agency.
There are still tough times ahead, but by pulling together, the going may just get a little easier.
