Make time for Time Out Burgers

Although Time Out Burgers is a rather small venue, with an even smaller street sign, it bustles with diners who have uncovered the eatery’s big secret.

Good-sized burgers and sandwiches prepared, like the menu suggests, “like they used to be.”

Located in Mountlake Terrace, Time Out Burgers has a substantial menu, consisting of a variety of name-sake burgers, sandwiches, salads and seafood, with an offering of Greek food for gyro fans. A listing of kids’ favorites also makes the joint family-friendly.

Owned by Greece-native Marnos Flemetakis, who has been in the restaurant business for 31 years, Time Out Burgers has been open less than a year after its debut on Oct. 2. This is the fifth restaurant opened by Flemetakis, who relocated from Greece 34 years ago.

Time Out Burgers is an optimal destination for a quick lunch, or anytime the dinner bell rings.

People pay good money to eat quality food, Flemetakis said, and he makes sure customers have a worthwhile experience.

“I do the cooking, the preparation, everything; we get no pre-made food,” Flemetakis said. “We cook here and buy fresh every day and prepare to order.”

Favorites are the Greek dishes and hamburgers, he said, which are made the old-fashioned way (with less machinery).

The cheeseburger features a 1/3 pound beef patty, and the usual spread of American cheese, mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion. Fries or salad can be added to most meals for $1.50 and onion rings tossed-in for $1.75.

The club sandwich consists of real turkey (think Thanksgiving), ham, bacon, Swiss and American cheese, mayo, lettuce and tomato. The bread is carefully placed at three locations, making the sandwich a double-decker variety.

Limited seating is available inside the small white building, which thankfully has a large entryway that was custom-made to fit a line of customers. A handful of picnic tables adorn the outside patio area.

Time Out Burgers is a family business, and Flemetakis’ wife, Georgia, manages a Mediterranean grocery store, Omega Mediterranean Foods, located adjacent to Time Out Burgers. The couple’s two sons and daughter help out at the restaurant.
