EDMONDS — Police say he sold her Ecstasy, watched her repeatedly vomit and have a seizure.

It wasn’t until hours later, when the girl’s lips had turned blue and she wouldn’t wake up, that he drove her to a hospital.

David M. Morris, 19, appeared Feb. 16 in Everett District Court, where a judge set bail at $50,000. Bail has been posted and Morris no longer is in custody pending further investigation into the case, according to information from Snohomish County Superior Court.

Edmonds police detectives arrested Morris Feb. 15 for investigation of homicide by a controlled substance in connection with the overdose death of Danielle Dawn McCarthy, 16, of Puyallup.

McCarthy, also of Puyallup, was already dead when Morris and another girl brought her to Stevens Hospital on New Year’s Day, according to a police affidavit.

Police said Morris sold McCarthy and the other girl Ecstasy twice on New Year’s Eve. McCarthy was showing signs of an overdose for hours before they arrived at a party in Edmonds, according to police. The police report also indicated she attended a party in the University District of Seattle earlier that evening.

Morris told detectives he thought McCarthy fell asleep after she vomited and had a seizure. The next morning, he tried to wake her up by placing her in a warm bath. Morris and another person checked the Internet and determined McCarthy had overdosed, according to court records.

The case will be handled in Snohomish County, at the request of the King County prosecuting attorney’s office, senior deputy Snohomish County prosecutor John Adcock said.

Although the suspected delivery and consumption of Ecstasy may have taken place in King County, the fact that she died in Snohomish County also gives Snohomish County jurisdiction, Adcock said.

Controlled substance homicide has been on the law books for years, but it is seldom charged in court, Adcock said.

He credited Edmonds detectives with conducting a thorough investigation. Detectives, according to the Edmonds Police, located and interviewed nearly everyone who was with or near McCarthy on New Year’s Eve.
