A 29-year-old man fractured both his legs when he fell or jumped from a moving freight train and was run over near Edmonds on Friday, Jan. 21, Edmonds Fire Department officials said.

According to a press release from fire officials, the incident occurred at approximately 9 a.m. Friday on the railroad tracks below Woodway about 3/4 of a mile south of Edmonds. The man apparently fell or jumped from a moving southbound freight train and landed under the train. His injuries occurred when the train ran over his legs, Edmonds battalion chief Steve Allison said.

A north-bound train crew saw the man and stopped to help, the press release said, and within minutes, officials from the Edmonds Fire Department responded on foot, since emergency vehicles couldn’t reach the area where the incident occurred. The man was backboarded and taken by train to where medical personnel could pick him up and transport him to Harborview Trauma Center in Seattle, officials said.

The man’s current status was unavailable due to privacy laws, Allison said.

Last year, Allison said, a young boy from Meadowdale was killed by a train when he and his brother were playing on the tracks.
