BELLINGHAM — Meadowdale scored two late goals and beat Lynnwood 3-0 in a Northwest District 3A girls soccer semifinal game Wednesday night.
The Mavericks (11-5-2) play Bellingham at 3 p.m tomorrow for the district championship. The Royals (7-10-1) face Squalicum at 1 p.m. in a winner-to-state/loser-out game.
Meadowdale’s Courtney Hughes scored off an assist from Brittney Doran in the 26th minute. The Mavericks then held off a charge from Lynnwood, led by striker Sarah Smart, and added insurance goals in the 62nd and 68th minutes.
Meadowdale head coach Sean Griffin credited junior defender Alexandra Dunsdon with slowing down Smart, who was “doing some scary things with the ball.
“Alexandra was man-marking Smart and she did a very good job of preventing her from getting any real good looks,” Griffin said.
Jessica Duty took a pass from Jamie Westby and scored Meadowdale’s second goal. Brooke Simons scored on a penalty kick for the third.
Goalie Tricia McMillan spearheaded Meadowdale’s defensive effort, notching her 10th shutout of the season.
