Meadowdale relied on Hanna Fjortoft’s five 3-pointers and some clutch free-throw shooting in the fourth quarter to preserve a 68-61 Wesco South girls basketball victory over Kamiak Jan. 9 at Meadowdale.
“Kamiak caused a lot of turnovers, they made it competitive,” Meadowdale coach Dan Taylor said. “We got stops (at the end) and forced them to foul.”
Kamiak pulled within three points with 45 seconds remaining, but Eryn Jones went 3-for-4 from line in the fourth and Danica Coronacion went 4-for-4 to preserve the lead.
Jones finished with 33 points and four steals, Fjortoft chipped in 15 points, all from 3-point range, and senior guard Alli Streit had seven assists for the Mavericks.
Kelsey Patrick led Kamiak with 24 points and three 3-pointers.
“Patrick played with a lot of intensity for them,” Jones said, “(but) we got key buckets when we needed it.”
In the boys game, Kamiak and Meadowdale ended the first half at Kamiak High School in a 24-point tie and the score was still tied with one second remaining when Meadowdale sealed a 50-48 Wesco South win on a jump shot by senior Evan Matteson.
“It was a good basketball game,” said Kamiak head coach Greg Turcott. “Hard fought the whole way. Close game throughout.”
With two minutes left in the first half, Kamiak (3-4, 4-6) went on a 6-0 run to tie the Mavericks going into the third quarter. The game was also tied when sophomore EJ Brown hit an impressive full court shot at the end of the third to put the Knights ahead by three.
The teams stayed close throughout the fourth quarter and Kamiak’s Jerad Parcells found the basket to tie the score with 10 seconds to go. But Matteson, who scored 11 points and had six blocks, sealed the win for Meadowdale in the final second.
“The fourth quarter they outplayed us,” said Turcott. “They played solid down the stretch. They know how to win.”
Skylar Stormo led Kamiak with 10 points and 11 rebounds while Meadowdale’s Matt Gorman had 16 points and 10 rebounds.
