U.S. Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Bainbridge Island) announced Monday, Nov. 8 that Lynnwood and Meadowdale high schools are receiving a joint one-year planning grant of $99,868 to study how smaller learning communities might improve student’s educational experience.
Smaller learning communities typically are utilized as schools within a school, allowing for a more intimate, smaller feel in large public schools.
The schools will split the grant. Educators believe that more personalized high schools lead to better student academic success.
“We know that smaller learning environments foster academic success among our local students,” Inslee said in a news release. “By providing Lynnwood’s high schools with resources to enhance their learning atmosphere, our students will have the confidence and tools they need to succeed in life after high school.”
Following the planning grant, the schools can apply for a follow-up implementation grant from the federal government should they decide to carry out their small learning community proposal.
The Department of Education’s Smaller Learning Communities Program grants help schools create or expand a smaller learning community program.
