Missed opportunities cost Lynnwood dearly in its Western Conference 3A football game against Shorecrest.

The Royals advanced four times inside the Scots’ 20-yard line but came away with only seven points, while Shorecrest made the most of its chances to pull out a 27-14 victory Oct. 17 at Edmonds Stadium.

“That honestly was the best game we’ve played this season,” said Lynnwood coach Dorian Manza. “We should have won this game. We blew four chances in the red zone.”

The Royals also had a botched punt and a fumble that led to Shorecrest points. Trailing 20-0 near the end of the first half, Lynnwood had a first-and-goal from the Scot 10 but came away with no points.

Then to start the second half, a fumble gave the Royals at the Shorecrest 20 but again Lynnwood was unable to punch it in.

“We should have definitely won that game,” Manza said.

Manza played both senior Geoff Meinken and Jared Shippey at quarterback and the latter passed for more than 200 yards. Wide receiver Dylan Burnett caught a 50-yard touchdown pass from Shippey and finished the game with 120 yards. The Lynnwood offensive line did not allow a sack, the first time this season.

Lynnwood’s other touchdown was a 30-yard interception return by Meinken, who also plays on the defensive line. It was the senior standout’s second straight game where he has run back an interception for a touchdown.

Against Glacier Peak, Meinken dropped back in coverage and picked off the pass. This time he tipped a ball at the line of scrimmage and ran it back for a score.

“He’s scored back-to-back touchdowns,” Manza said. “He’s just that type of an athlete.”

After allowing 20 points in the first half, the Lynnwood defense surrendered only one touchdown in the second half.

“Our offense put our defense in a bind,” Manza said.

Shorecrest quarterback Sam Heck, however, did connect on touchdown passes of 30 and 28 yards in large part because of some blown coverage by Lynnwood.

“We let the receivers get behind us,” Manza said.

The Royals host crosstown rival Meadowdale at 5 p.m., Friday, Oct. 16.

“We still need to develop that mentality that we can win football games,” Manza said. “We need to get in that mind frame and take advantage of our opportunities.

“We get up for them (Mavericks). No matter what the records are it’s always a close game.”
