MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Councilwoman Michelle Robles resigned from the council June 28.
Robles’ letter of resignation said she stepped down due to health and personal reasons.
Mayor Jerry Smith read the letter notifying the City Council of the resignation at the June 28 work/study session.
“Michelle had fought through a number of health issues recently and was commuting a long distance to her new place of employment and the decision to resign was not an easy one,” Smith said in a press release.
Robles had served on the council since 2004. She served on several boards and committees, including the Snohomish Health District Board, Association of Snohomish County Cities and Towns Executive Board, Association of Washington Cities (AWC) Legislative Committee, Prosperity Partnership, Snohomish County Housing and Homelessness Policy Oversight Committee, and Snohomish County Executive’s MRD Panel Regarding Paine Field Expansion.
The council will begin the recruitment process for a new council member July 23; applications for the position will be accepted through 3 p.m. Aug. 13.
To qualify as a City Council candidate, interested parties must be at least 18 years of age, a United States citizen without any felony convictions, and a registered voter who has lived within the city for at least one year prior to the appointment. The term runs until the November 2013 election is certified and the appointee would need to stand for election in November 2013 to continue to serve for the remainder of the four-year term through December 31, 2015.
The council will interview candidates at a special meeting 6 p.m. Aug. 14. Following the candidate interviews in open session, the council will discuss the qualifications of the applications in a closed executive session, and then reconvene in open session to discuss and select the new council member. That person would be sworn in at the Aug. 20 council meeting.
