Sometimes, the best places to eat are not the most obvious. They might not have a huge street-facing sign. They might not have a large parking lot either. They might not be the fanciest looking places, either.
Mo’s Best BBQ in downtown Everett fits that description. Located in a small, older storefront at the corner of Hewitt Avenue and Cedar Street a few blocks east of the Everett Events Center, the interior is hardly tres chic. Instead, with the plastic chairs and tables, pictures of Muhammad Ali and the sounds of classic acoustic blues playing, it has a small, humble ambience. Also, if you go, you won’t find a parking lot; you’ll have to parallel park on the street.
Where Mo’s really excels is the food. The restaurant is changing its menu, adding items other than southern barbecue, with plans to have 125 items by the end of June. Newer items will include fried chicken and stir-fry.
Mo’s specialty is its barbecue chicken and ribs, which are slathered in sauce from an old family recipe. The ribs and chicken are tender, with the meat easily coming off the bone. The same sauce that makes the chicken and ribs a tasty eat is also what gives the baked beans a flavor unlike anything available at a grocery store.
The restaurant also offers sandwiches, too. The hot links can be made as spicy as you like, dripping in sauce. And it’s thick, too. You will need two hands to eat it.
The current menu has a variety of meals at many different prices. Sandwiches, which include one side dish, cost anywhere from $4 to $7. Meals, which include two sides and bread, are anywhere from $8 to $17. Mo’s even offers family meals ($22 to $43) and a variety of barbecue chicken family packs, which include sides and bread. A variety of deserts are also available.
While the eat-in space is limited, Mo’s does deliver, within certain hours and can also cater events.
But if you do eat in, don’t be surprised if the two-person staff treats you like a longtime friend.
