Teens Thursday evening rescued a 26-year-old man who nearly drowned in Martha Lake.
Witnesses told firefighters the man wasn’t breathing when two teenage boys pulled the man from the bottom of the lake shortly before 6:30 p.m., said Fire District 1 spokeswoman Leslie Hynes.
“Bystanders administered first aid and rescue breathing, and the man was breathing when firefighters arrived,” she said.
Paramedics took the man to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle in serious condition, Hynes said.
Firefighters want to thank the teens who rescued the man but they left before firefighters arrived.
“We would really like to thank them because their actions most likely saved this man’s life,” Hynes said.
The beach at the park was crowded with swimmers and sunbathers at the time of the incident. “Drowning can happen quickly and silently. Apparently no one was aware this man was in trouble until the teens spotted him on the bottom of the lake,” Hynes said.
She urged teen and adult swimmers to know the limits of their swimming abilities and to never swim alone.
The fire district has partnered with Safe Kids Snohomish County to stock a cabinet full of life jackets for public use at the Martha Lake swim area. Life jackets for adults and children are available free of charge in the self-serve cabinet through Labor Day.
