All available evidence makes it clear: President Bush and Vice President Cheney are public enemies #1 and 2.

Look at their actions: They let Osama bin Laden escape when our soldiers had him trapped in the Tora Bora Mountains. They lied to Congress about a nation innocent of any attacks against the U.S., and then proceeded to illegally invade that nation, bombing civilians, causing a refugee crisis and creating a terrorist training ground where none existed before. They jailed hundreds without charge, counsel or trial. They have refused subpoenas from Congress when it has attempted to practice its constitutionally mandated oversight. They have permitted and encouraged soldiers and intelligence operatives to torture people. They have exposed an intelligence agent, risking lives and careers, and the nation’s security. They have failed to properly arm our soldiers. They have extended soldiers’ tours of duty, while cutting veterans’ benefits. They have spied on American citizens. They have used signing statements to refuse to execute laws passed by Congress. They have squandered the budgetary surplus they inherited, and run up the greatest debt in our nation’s history. They have awarded no-bid contracts and government positions to incompetent cronies.

It’s not enough to agree that Bush is the worst president we’ve ever suffered, or that Cheney scares the hell out of us. We must act, or a precedent will be established: Rather than being a nation with three equal branches of government, the United States will be run by a president with dictatorial powers. If Bush and Cheney do not declare martial law and postpone the 2008 election, it will only be a matter of time before a future president declares himself, or herself, president-for-life.

We must impeach these criminals to save our republic. Let us phone and e-mail our senators, demanding that they co-sponsor and vote for Sen. Feingold’s motion to censure Bush. Let us phone and e-mail our representatives, demanding that they co-sponsor and vote for Rep. Kucinich’s bill to impeach Cheney, and demanding that they pressure Speaker Pelosi and Rep. Conyers to get on with the impeachment of Bush.
