The first local festival of the summer kicks off today, Friday, June 1, as the Edmonds Waterfront Festival opens for three days of events at the Edmonds Marina.
Returning again this year to the festival are several restored classic yachts from the Pacific Northwest Fleet of the Classic Yacht Association. The vessels will be moored in the Port’s mid-marina area near Anthony’s Homeport restaurant and adjacent to the public launch facility.
“I can’t think of a more fitting place for the Classic Yacht Association to participate,” said Frank Young, CYA Port Captain. “We had a fantastic rendezvous last year and this year’s promises to be even better.”
Among the vintage vessels expected to be on show are the “Argonaut II,” a 73-foot 1922 Edson B. Schock design; the 52-foot, 1953 Stephens “Madera”; the 47-foot, 1926 Lake Union Dream Boat “Winifred”; the Monk-designed, 40-foot “Lady Grace” from 1940; “Woodrow,” a 34-foot, 1929 Stephens Brothers; and three Chris Crafts: a 1942, 35-foot “Liberty”; the 1951, 31-foot “Smuggler” and the 1948, 30-foot “Mudshark.”
The commissioning of Edmonds’ public-safety boat, the Charles W. Cain, is set to take place at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 2 during the festival. Maritime exhibits by the Port of Edmonds, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Sea Scouts will also be on display along the north end of the marina.
The festival includes a wide variety of attractions including arts &crafts, food and commercial vendors, and inflatables, pony rides and maritime themed crafts and activities in the children’s area.
The Comcast Family Stage and the Beer Garden Stage both offer a full lineup of entertainment during the weekend. Highlights of the Family Stage include J.P. Patches, Tony LaStella &The Goombas, Breaking Point Dance Company, Elvis impersonator Shane Cobain and a working dog show by Paws with a Cause.
On the Beer Garden Stage visitors can expect such acts as blues guitarist Nick Vigarino, The Afrodisiacs, Canadian Celtic band Tillers Folly, The Beatniks and the Charles White Band.
Registration opens at 7:45 a.m. for the 2nd annual 5K Run/Walk Saturday morning, June 2. The run starts at 9 a.m. at Edmonds City Park. Entry fee is $20 advance or $25 day of race.
Free shuttle service to the festival is provided from the Methodist Church, Sherwood Elementary, and Downtown Edmonds at 5th &Dayton, and 5th &Bell.
Now in its 20th year, the festival is a project of the Rotary Club of Edmonds. All proceeds from the festival are returned to the community.
