Gary Nelson (R-Edmonds) was unanimously elected Monday, Jan. 3, to a one-year term as Snohomish County Council Chair. The previous chair, John Koster, was elected Vice-Chair.

Following the vote, Nelson praised Koster for his success as chair, leading Snohomish County’s legislative branch through an ambitious 2004 agenda:

• Establishing a prioritized and balanced county budget, with critical investments in law and justice agencies and adequate financial reserves;

• Maintaining a strong presence on regional boards and commissions such as the Regional Transportation Investment District, Washington State Association of Counties and Puget Sound Regional Council;

• Establishing criteria for mitigation of the Brightwater regional sewer treatment plant, should King County build it in south Snohomish County;

• Investing in public facilities, including transportation and community ball fields;

• Updating the county’s Comprehensive Plan and fighting for local control of land use issues.

Nelson previously served as Chair of the Council in 2002 and 2003.
