MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — A citizens’ group to discuss and act on community issues formed in Mountlake Terrace on Saturday.

The group, known as Mountlake Terrace Citizen Voices, intends to facilitate public discourse, education and action among Terrace citizens in a respectful way, said Sharon Maynard of Mountlake Terrace.

“We have to find ways to hear citizens,” Maynard said. “Our first job is to be informed and to find ways to interact with our government and each other that is respectful.”

About 20 people attended the first informal meeting on Saturday, Jan. 7. The next meeting is set for 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Feb. 11., at the Mountlake Terrace Library.

The group is exploring other ways to interact because not everyone has the time or is comfortable in meetings, she said. Those other ways may include a Web site, e-mail list or phone tree.

At Saturday’s meeting, the group started a list of what they want to see in the community and what they are concerned about. They intend to resume the discussion at the next meeting.

The group will appoint a different facilitator and secretary at each meeting, Maynard said. There is no chair or president.
