New school principals named

Several new principals join the Edmonds School District this summer.

Most recently, Miriam Mickelson was named principal of Edmonds-Woodway High School while Donna Alexander will head Brier Terrace Middle School.

Mickelson previously served as the associate principal of Lake Washington High School in the Lake Washington School District, which covers areas of Kirkland, Redmond and Sammamish. She supervised Hispanic outreach classes and developed an after-school mentoring and tutoring program.

She takes over for Michelle Trifunovic, who accepted a position with the Issaquah School District.

Alexander served as associate principal at Eastlake High School/Renaissance School of Arts and Reasoning Junior High in the Lake Washington School District. Before that she was assistant principal at Washington High School in the Franklin Pierce School District.

She takes over for Kevin Allen, who is replacing Dale Cote at Meadowdale High School. Cote has moved on to the Lake Washington School District. Before heading Brier Terrace Middle School, Allen was principal of Lakewood High School near Arlington and is a former assistant principal for Lynnwood High School.

Other new principals:

• Katy Kayler, Spruce Elementary School, replaces Margaret Mesaros, who retired. Kayler previously was an elementary principal intern in the Northshore School District, as well as a teacher on special assignment in literacy and assessment.

• Chris Fulford, Lynndale Elementary School, replaces David Zwaschka, who stepped down after eight years at the school. Fulford has been a principal intern since August 2011 in the Seattle School District.

• Brett Hagen, Sherwood Elementary School, replaces Christine Kessler for her one-year leave of absence. Hagen has been a teacher at Terrace Park Elementary since 2006 and completed his principal internship there in 2011. He has also served as acting principal, when needed, at various schools in the Edmonds district since 2010.
