Block parties, cookouts and exhibits all make up the activities planned in South County cities this year for National Night Out. The family-friendly events, celebrated across the country Aug. 3, is spearheaded by the Wynnewood, Penn.-based National Association of Town Watch. More than 10,000 communities in all 50 states participate.

Here are a few of the events South County cities have planned:

Edmonds

While the official National Night Out night is in August, Edmonds’ celebration will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. July 27 at the Frances Anderson Playfield, 700 Main St., hosted by the Edmonds Police Foundation.

“It’s a wonderful event that really helps educate people on safety and prevention, and allows them to meet,” said Robin Heslop, who has been coordinating the Edmonds efforts for more than a decade.

On display will be vehicles and equipment from the K-9 and SWAT units and Fire District 1. The K-9 unit will kick off a project to find a replacement for a retiring dog.

Mill Creek

A cooperative National Night Out event, sponsored by Snohomish County with the Mill Creek Police Department, will be 5-9 p.m. Aug. 3 at McCollum Pioneer Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett. Free food, face painting, a fly-in of the Sheriff’s helicopter plus a live extrication exercise by Fire Districts 1 and 7 are just some of the events planned.

“This is the best way for our residents to meet law enforcement officers and other agencies who can help them to prevent crime,” said Nathan Lerma, police support officer for Mill Creek Police Department.

Mountlake Terrace

Mountlake Terrace’s National Night Out event will be from 6-9 p.m. Aug. 3 at Evergreen Playfields, 22205 56th Ave. W.

The country-rock band Bullet Creek will perform alongside displays and demonstrations from Fire District 1, the U.S. Navy, and K-9 and SWAT teams.

“This event raises crime awareness, strengthens neighborhood spirit and provides an opportunity for neighbors to meet other neighbors,” said event coordinator Erin Kelly.

Last year the national association selected Mountlake Terrace as a National Award Winner for its outstanding participation.

“By involving several households in each neighborhood, it becomes a real community building effort,” said Shannon Sessions, police spokeswoman. “Statistics prove that neighbors knowing one another reduces crime.”
