EDMONDS — In a late-night e-mail March 27, Edmonds City Councilwoman Mauri Moore announced she will not seek re-election to a second council term in the fall.
The missive was sent 90 minutes after Moore used her council-remarks period to warn Edmonds residents that the “city’s financial future is weak” and exhort them to push city leaders to get serious about a “city vision for the future and a solid plan … .” She promised to work on that goal the remainder of the year.
As of The Enterprise deadline, newcomer Adrienne Fraley-Monillas was the only one to announce designs on Moore’s Pos. 5 seat.
“This has been a very hard decision for me, as it has been a privilege to serve you in this capacity,” Moore wrote in her e-mail. “When I ran four years ago, my motive was just to serve my community. I had no further ambitions at that time. I shall resist the political urge to think I am indispensable.”
Although Moore did not consistently vote as a bloc with other council members, she could be counted upon to support parks acquisition and increasing business incentives in the downtown core area. As for her greatest achievements on the council, she pointed to helping create an initiative for municipal broadband in Edmonds, championing the purchase of the five-acre park on the former Woodway Elementary site, urging the council to support the fight against global warming and helping create the South Snohomish County Cities consortium.
The former television journalist who lives a stone’s throw from the new Edmonds Center for the Arts said she plans to “take some time off, replenish my bank account with private sector work and, perhaps, ask you someday if I can serve you again.”
