No possibility of ‘endless inflation’

Could the Shoreline School District’s reasonable policy requiring principals’ pay to be in the top 25 percent of all 12 local districts (if adopted by all the districts) really create the “endless inflationary cycle” claimed by forum editor Evan Smith? (“Top 25 percent pay for principals’ pay ridiculous,” Forum, June 27) Of course not! Take the possible scenario where principals in all local districts received the same salary; in this case, the policy would result in no raises at all. In actual practice, the policy would cause salaries to creep towards the same level, that of the highest paying district. An “endless inflationary cycle” could occur only if a different policy were adopted, requiring each district to raise their principals’ salaries to be greater than those in all the other districts; simply aiming to be in the top 25 percent would cause no problems.
