So far, residents of the area between Lynnwood and Mill Creek seem to have adjusted to their new ZIP code, 98087.
No confusion or complaints about the change, which took effect July 1, have been reported, said Robert Nelson, manager of operations and program support for the Seattle district of the U.S. Postal Service.
The former 98037 ZIP code has been split basically in half, with the southern part of 98037 continuing to use that number, Nelson said.
The new ZIP code is needed because “that whole area up there is just exploding with new growth,” Nelson said.
In the past four years, 4,000 new addresses have sprung up in the Lynnwood area, Nelson said.
“It’s dense population as well,” he said. The area between 164th Street SW and about 128th Street SW has seen a sharp increase in construction of condominiums and apartments.
The Seattle district is seeking funds to build a new postal outlet between Lynnwood and Everett, he said. Meanwhile, carriers will continue to operate out of the current Lynnwood facility at 6817 208th St. SW.
A letter was sent to residents and businesses in the area notifying them of the change, Nelson said.
“The public doesn’t need to do anything,” he said. “Most of that’ll be taken care of by us.”
Mail will continue to be delivered under the old ZIP code, Nelson said. He did advise residents to notify their friends and relatives of the change.
“It’ll just be a lot speedier if they do that,” he said.
