Officials should focus on people, not rules

Councilman John Zambrano with military background has little take on the changed ideals of the now generation. The Oct. 30 Mountlake Terrace Council Work Session minutes quote him suggesting a repeat of an etiquette review of the public comment policy concerning the removal of hats during council meetings. I thought the council wanted to encourage people to show interest in our city by welcoming them to council meetings. He quotes protocol in restaurants, courtrooms and government meetings suggest hat removal. I called them all. No such rules exist. This is 2008 and our people have more worry about keeping jobs and saving their homes than “‘50’s Hat Rules” at our lonely council meetings. If anyone shows up in a hat, run to welcome them just to take away the deafening echo in chambers. With short funds, plans on hold and many area meetings canceled, spend time re-reading that 1,324 signature petition presented to you on keeping building at three stories, preserving neighborhood parking and no new city hall without a vote and I will take my hat off to your 7-to-nothing council. Forget hats and think people!
