Oh, what a night it will be.
Wistfulness and high energy will take over June 9 when Sno-King Community Chorale presents “Ticket to Broadway: ‘Oh What A Night!’”
The show is billed as a rock ‘n’ roll tribute to Frankie Valli and features Fifth Avenue, a red-hot quartet from Las Vegas.
How rock will figure into choral music, well, that is the question.
Consider the concert’s title refers to the Four Seasons’ 1975 chart-topping “Oh, What A Night.” Valli provided the bridges and backup vocals for this expression of sheer wonder a young man experiences after his first time with a woman. Recordings of the remarkably ringing quality of Valli’s falsetto still resonates sincerity, enchantment and naiveté – in a word, romance.
Also slated for performance are the comical (because it is understandable) craziness of a lover in “Goin’ Out Of My Head” and “I’ve Got You Under My Skin”; the obsession of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You”; and the insecurity of “Will You Love Still Me Tomorrow.”
Tight harmonies and electrifying presence profile the growing reputation of the guest quartet, Fifth Avenue. Jazz, doo-wop, pop, classical rock, barbershop, a cappella or accompanied – you name it, word is they do it.
Notables performing will be former students of Sno-King Artistic Director and Conductor Frank DeMiero; crooner Ric Shallow interpreting “My Eyes Adored You”; and Fifth Avenue’s Rob Hyatt and Jerry Jones.
Up for auction was the privilege of directing the chorale’s show-opening “The Star-Spangled Banner.” Barney McClure from Edmonds outbid everybody else. DeMiero will hand McClure the baton but take it back from then on. Good luck, McClure.
A rock ‘n’ roll tribute and a community chorale? Who knows? Sno-King does strange and wonderful things with choral music.
“Oh What A Night!” it will be.
