A commercial parking lot could replace, at least temporarily, the Old Skippers building on Edmonds’ waterfront.
Property owner Bob Gregg plans to demolish the old restaurant and replace it with a temporary parking lot, which will be used by Sound Transit as it expands its Edmonds station.
Demolition could take place in the next two months, Gregg hopes.
Sound Transit has said it will apply for a conditional use permit soon, so that it can occupy the site in September when construction at the station begins.
One of the most talked-about half-acre properties in Edmonds, the site is seen as a linchpin in the redevelopment efforts at the Harbor Square/Antique Mall redevelopment site.
Gregg has repeatedly said he’d like to build a structure on the property — perhaps one taller than current laws allow — and said again June 25 that he continues to plan for a building.
“Nothing is slowed down,” Gregg said.
Earlier this year, Gregg said he’d like to make decisions regarding the property sometime before fall.
Sound Transit expects to start construction in September, and finish in early 2009. Gregg hopes to start building something as soon as Sound Transit is done, he said June 25.
The city has been hurriedly considering various proposals for the property, including possibly purchasing the site, or condemning it, or pursuing a public-private partnership. No decisions have been made.
“We are watching to see what the City Council does with their land acquisition ideas,” Gregg said. “But we didn’t buy (the property) to speculate. We bought it to build. Nothing has changed our minds so far.”
