One sweet treat

For the Enterprise

Something sweet happened in Mill Creek on Saturday, Oct. 15.

Children, teens and grown-ups alike flocked to the House of Bread to see it. So did the city’s mayor, police chief and other local leaders. They all watched, many snapping pictures, as the bakery workers crafted the biggest cinnamon roll this rock has ever seen.

It was the dream of shop owners Wayne and Anita Warren to bake a 250-pound cinnamon roll – a pastry big enough to earn a spot in the Guinness Book of Records.

The one they baked Saturday, Oct. 15 did the job at 246 pounds. Close enough.

The Warrens wanted to top the 90-pound roll they baked in 2004 for their opening day. There was also the challenge of a Kansas newspaper, which claimed nobody could beat a local baker’s 150-pound roll.

When Saturday came, though, everyone got rolled up in the giant pastry.

Shop workers unrolled and joined together countless smaller rolls to build the mother of them all. They cooked it in a giant aluminum pan, which Anita Warren’s brother designed. Mill Creek police officers helped lift it into the oven, while firefighters helped take it out.

Everyone helped eat it. They lined up out the door, down the sidewalk and across a bridge to get a taste.

Wayne Warren’s serious expression didn’t fade until he savored the first sugary bite of the giant roll.

“That was good, that was great,” he said.

Eat that, Kansas.
